According to an Associated Press article by Linda Lombardi published May 2nd in the Dayton Daily News, laminate countertops are again finding favor with homeowners. There are several reasons this may be happening. A wealth of new colors and patterns recently introduced make it possible to find laminate countertops with the look and even feel of stone. Newer manufacturing techniques also allow fabricators to create some of the attractive and complex edge treatments similar to those popularized by granite. But perhaps most importantly, price may play a critical role. Laminate countertops cost on average only a quarter or third that of natural stone making them even more attractive as homeowners increasingly seek the greatest value for each dollar.
The article also states, “In flooring as well, traditional materials such as linoleum, which had fallen out of fashion, are boasting updated looks, improved quality and lower cost.” Both appearance and wearability are better than ever. And, as an added benefit, linoleum floors are made with sustainable materials — primarily linseed oil — which lessen their environmental impact.
