Times have never been better for homeowners looking to upgrade a kitchen or bathroom countertop. The popularity of granite has intensified competition amongst suppliers leading to more choices, lower prices, and better fabrication processes. But there have been other benefits as well. Manufacturers of laminate, solid surface, and new alternative countertops have stepped up their product offerings in an effort to keep pace with market trends.
Laminate countertops, for example, now offer styles that simulate the look and feel of stone at a much lower price point than granite. Improvements in manufacturing have also allowed for new edge treatments that break free from the typical “rolled-form” look that can rob laminate of contemporary flair. Some laminate tops can also accept solid surface sinks from Karran that are built in to provide an ”undermount” appearance for easy cleaning.
Not to be outdone, solid surface materials like Dupont’s Corian have also seen some style enhancements. Several colors have been added that resemble the unique natural patterns that at one time were only available with stone. Solid surfaces are a great alternative because they can be installed with nearly invisible water-tight seams and built-in sinks. Perhaps the greatest benefit to these tops, though, is repairability. In contrast with granite tops, which are strong but not malleable, scratches and even some deeper gouges on solid surfaces can often be filled and polished to their original beauty.
Quartz material combines both stone aggregate and acrylic resins to yield the strength of stone with a non-porous hygenic surface. In addition to cleanliness and stain-resistance, style is one of its greatest advantages. Quartz countertops can reproduce many vibrant colors that natural materials just can not offer. These man-made tops have very consistent patterns as well, making them easy to match and add to at a later date.
Finally, for the environmentally conscious consumer or even the daring decorator, market-leading manufacturers are providing alternatives such as recycled-content countertops and concrete. Stylish tops are available that incorporate crushed glass or even pressed paper. Concrete tops are extraordinarily durable and can be dyed to many desirable hues.
